Is The Skyline Going EV?
Will the fourteenth-generation Nissan Skyline, the V38, be an all-electric car? Well, that is certainly possible according to some independent sources. The Nissan Skyline in America is well known as the GT-R and the current R35 generation is set to bow out of production soon. This was the first GT-R ever brought to America as a full-production car in 2008.
Not Sold In America… Sort Of
The Skyline has never officially been offered for sale in America as a Nissan Skyline, but instead as an Infiniti G35 and G37 and later the Q50 models. The Skyline and Nissan 350 and 370Z shared their platform.
The Dawn Of The GT-R
The Nissan Skyline was introduced in Japan in 1957 as the Prince Skyline before Nissan merged with Prince Motor Company in 1967, later becoming the vehicle we all know and love today. The first ever GT-R came out in 1969 as the Skyline GT-R, and it featured a 2.0-liter inline-6 dual overhead cam (DOHC) that made 160 horsepower and 130 lb-ft of torque, both being a lot for a small car weighing roughly 2,400 lbs. Nissan produced 1,945 of the original Skyline GT-R. Later, in 1989, Wheels magazine in Australia would dub the latest R32 generation Skyline GT-R as “Godzilla”, and it stuck. Every generation since, especially the current R35, has been called Godzilla.
Electric Skyline
Japanese market Skyline models are available in either coupe, sedan, or crossover SUV, with new reports saying that the Skyline will become an electric four-door fastback and SUV. The latest rumors believe that the Skyline EV fastback sedan will have 443 horsepower while the SUV version, will have 450 horsepower, and be based on the Nissan Ariya electric SUV. The Skyline EV SUV is expected to debut in 2025.
A Shared Future
Since both Skyline in Japan and Infiniti Q50 in America are the same car, it is possible that the latest Infiniti EV concept fastback, the Qe, could be what the American market could expect to see.
Maybe An Electric Or PHEV GT-R, Too?
Now, if the Nissan Skyline lineup of cars all become electric vehicles, could that mean that the next GT-R, the R36, will be all-electric, or could it be some type of plug-in hybrid? Only time will tell.
