Top 5 Reasons Google Built-in is a Very Good Thing for the Nissan Rogue
One of the biggest challenges for all automakers has been interactive infotainment systems designed to handle audio, navigation, communication, and other vehicle systems. The systems must be comprehensive yet easy to use and quick to respond. Adding to the challenge is that smartphones do this so well, and there is an expectation that a five-figure vehicle should operate as well as a three-figure phone. They often don’t, so Nissan lets those who design these interfaces do it for them. That is why you will find the Google Built-in operating system running the center touchscreen in the 2024 Rogue SL and Platinum.
The system brings the Rogue’s 12.3-inch touchscreen alive, making it enjoyable to use. Nissan of Rochester offers you the following five reasons why you will like the Google Built-in system.
1. System Power
It’s funny how we may be well aware of power stats when purchasing a computer or even a smartphone, but we don’t associate the idea of power with car infotainment systems. The need for power is there, and the Google Built-in system contains so much computing power that engineers found it challenging to reach its limits during their testing process.
“It’s really, really hard to get it to 50% [central processing unit utilization], let alone 100%,” said Florian Spahiu, Senior Manager, Infotainment and Connected Engineering. “The speed and processing power are very similar to what you experience in your phone. As customers, our benchmark is our phones. We use them on a daily basis and we expect similar performance from the vehicle’s touchscreen – to easily jump from app to app, or swipe and zoom maps without any delays.”
2. A Good Listener
Cars have had Voice Recognition systems even longer than smartphones, just not very good ones. If a command wasn’t spoken precisely enough, they were often unresponsive or, worse, would execute the wrong command. Google Built-in uses the Google Assistant app, which is the model execution of smartphone AI software that lets you make requests in plain English and enter addresses normally. The Navigation, audio, climate control, and other vehicle systems can all be operated using Google Assistant.
3. The Joy of Google Maps
For its navigation system, Google naturally uses its own Google Maps, the most downloaded and popular navigation system in the US. The system is just as easy to use and as comprehensive as the one on your phone, including the traffic data. Connecting the system to your Google account automatically brings in contact and calendar data. Anyone with a lot of experience with vehicle navigation systems recalls the annoying necessity of updating the system. But the system’s Google Maps App is continuously updated just as it is on your phone.
Other Apps on the Google Play store are also available for downloading on the system. Apps such as Spotify, Amazon Music, and many more can be easily downloaded into your Rogue.
4. Smartphone Independent and Compatible.
With your favorite apps built into the Rogue’s system, you will have navigation, music, and other content apps on hand, even if your phone is not. At the same time, if you are used to using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, you still can. There is also no need to have the top model phone in order to connect to the new Rogue. In setting up the system, the Google Built-in team tested it with nearly two dozen phones from the past three years to ensure compatibility. Future phone compatibility will be covered by automatic updates.
5. Chicago Tested
The Google Built-in team brought test vehicles to Chicago, where its dizzying multi-level roads, highways, and wide overpasses have long challenged drivers. Those same conditions, plus GPS signals bouncing off skyscrapers, have notoriously challenged navigation systems. They tested, adjusted, and tested again until they were satisfied the system would be foolproof in an urban environment.
As of this writing, Rogue SL and Platinum models are just starting to arrive in the Nissan of Rochester inventory. If you want to experience the automotive infotainment system at its best, check out the Rogue SL or Platinum and try out the system for yourself.
