Nissan’s latest enhancement to its ProPILOT system, ProPILOT 2.1, includes a feature you wish was on all vehicles—at least all vehicles in front of you. Nissan of Rochester explains.

Nissan’s ProPILOT system is a hands-on driver-assist system that combines Intelligent Cruise Control with a stop-and-hold function that can bring the vehicle to a complete stop, hold it in place, and bring it back up to speed when traffic starts moving again. The system also includes Steering Assist technologies to keep the vehicle centered in its lane.

ProPILOT 2.0 is a significant enhancement to the system, which can be found on newer Nissan models with an onboard navigation system.  The system integrates with the navigation system to know:

  • What kind of road you are on (2 or 4+ lanes, divided, etc.)
  • If you are on a system-compatible road
  • What the road will do just ahead (curve, lose a lane, etc.)

If the road and system are compatible and the system is engaged, you can take your hands off the wheel and feet off the pedals. Your Nissan will continue within the lane at your designated speed and then stay a specified distance behind a slower vehicle it encounters. Passing a vehicle is done manually, which is why you must still pay attention to the road when the system is engaged.

Now comes ProPILOT 2.1. It adds Left Change Assist, which will help prevent you from being that vehicle that lingers on the left lane as other vehicles wish to pass. It works as follows: When on a four-lane highway, with the system engaged, after the driver completes passing a vehicle to the right, if the vehicle remains in the left lane noticeably longer than necessary, the driver will get an alert suggesting they return to the right lane. Don’t you wish everyone had one of those?

In addition, Following your pre-set destination, ProPILOT Assist 2.1 is designed to let you know when your exit is coming up and when it’s clear to move over. Highway mapping and 360° traffic monitoring help contribute to smooth and precise driving.

ProPILOT Assist 2.1 is available on the 2025 Nissan Rogue SL and Platinum grades, which feature Google Built-in for their multimedia operating system and come standard with Google Maps navigation. It will also be available on the 2025 Nissan Armada, a three-row full-size SUV equipped with Google Built-in when it arrives in early 2025. As Nissan adopts the Google Built-in system, you can expect ProPILOT Assist 2.1 to be available on more Nissan models in the future.

ProPILOT Assist can significantly reduce driver fatigue when driving long distances on interstates and other controlled-access highways. The left Change Assist is a minor addition that, hopefully, you will never use, but you will be grateful for if it activates.
