The Evolution of a Supercar: All About the GT-R’s History

Since its introduction in 2007, the GT-R has remained Nissan’s fastest car in their lineup. But it didn’t start out that way. What started out as another automaker’s influential offering, today’s GT-R has involved into a supercar of the future. Discover the history behind the Nissan GT-R, its origins, and how it became the car it is today.
Humble Beginnings
Even though it’s no longer in production, many auto enthusiasts recognize the Skyline name. It all started in Japan at Prince Motor Company with its first introduction in 1957. The first models were in production as either a four-door sedan or five-door station wagon, but its status as a family vehicle didn’t last for long. Nissan took over the Skyline model less than ten years later with the unveiling of the 1969 Nissan Skyline GT-R, marking its shift to a more racecar-style vehicle than a sedan. Not only did it greatly increase the engine power, but it also shrunk down to a two-door model to save weight during the international gas crisis. Over the years, the Skyline went through countless changes in style, but one thing remained: a steady race toward the performance vehicles of today.
1989-Today
Throughout its many versions, the GT-R started to really emerge in the Skyline form in 1989. That’s when the Skyline GT-R became a real contender in races across Japan with its 280-horsepower engine. Then, just a few years later, the Skyline GT-R was produced for the public with an improved build and steadier steering than in years past. Years later, the Nissan GT-R finally made it to America with a huge jump in power up to 473 horsepower. Even though the Skyline name has since been dropped, the GT-R remains part of the legacy with the 50th Anniversary Edition recently released in 2020. Today, each GT-R released quickly sells out. That’s partially due to its constant improvements, along with its appearances in pop culture like the Fast and the Furious franchise and various video games. Its aerodynamic design, high-tech interior, and unbeatable performance remains at the top of the supercar releases of today.
