For over five decades, the Nissan Z has been produced with the purpose of bringing sports cars to the masses. The first true Z model, the Datsun 240Z, debuted in 1969 at the affordable price of $3,526. With a 2.4L 151 horsepower engine, the 240Z brought power and style to the everyday driver. In competition with now-classic muscle cars and other sports cars, the 240Z two-seater offered a top speed of 125mph and 0-60 in only 8 seconds – a feat that beat out most competitors by far. The power and style of the 240Z made Datsun a global competitor in the sports car market for the first time, beginning the legacy of the Z.

Facing Challenges

Over several generations of changes, the Nissan name was finally added in 1984. Over the years, the Z has seen countless changes, including convertible models, four-seat creations, and several body style changes. Throughout recessions, an oil crisis, and other setbacks, the Z faced each hurdle with a fresh approach, adapting to changing economies and sensibilities. As driver’s needs changed, so did the Z. From focusing on performance to putting more effort into interior luxury, Nissan faced each challenge head-on without sacrificing quality or style. As times changed, the Z did too, by shifting focus back to performance while embracing the details that customers have come to expect.

A New Generation

This year’s model of the Nissan Z features three model styles, starting at $39,990, and a complete redesign without abandoning what made the Z famous. The 2023 model shows off classic styling with modern technology, bringing the Z to the new generation. With considerable jump to a 400 horsepower V6 twin turbo engine, the newest model keeps everything that the Z is known for while bringing it up to date. The abundance of safety and driver assist features include intelligent cruise control and blind spot warning, to name a few. Modern touches like climate control and an available touchscreen bring the classic Z up to date for today’s driver. Today’s Nissan Z represents everything the original stood for – affordability, power, and style without compromise.
